Murang’a Teachers’ Training College
Founded to address the demand for quality primary teacher education in Murang’a County, Murang’a Teachers Training College (MTTC) is strategically located along the Thika–Nyeri Highway in Makuyu, just past Kenol and Thika towns. Known by its motto, Elimu ni Mwangaza (“Education is Light”), the college remains committed to illuminating young minds through competent teacher development.
From inception, MTTC focused on offering Primary Teacher Education (PTE) program up to the year 2021 when the education system changed to Competency based Education (CBE). The college started offering three year Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) which was later changed to Diploma Teacher Education (DTE) in the year 2024, requiring at least a KCSE mean grade of C (plain).
As Kenya’s national curriculum and educational needs evolved, MTTC stayed ahead by updating its courses and strengthening practicum components inclusive of micro teaching and supervised school teaching to ensure graduates meet Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) standards.
MTTC is run by a professional team led by Principal Ngure P. Kihara and overseen by a Board of Governors chaired by Irene Muthoni Kibandi . The college prides itself on values such as integrity, teamwork, professionalism, respect, and adaptability all crucial to its mission.
The student population of about 720 is drawn from all over the country and we appreciate the fact that our student teachers have developed admirable qualities of cultural understanding, empathy and tolerance as they go about their daily lives in the campus. We have invested heavily not only in improving the quality of teaching and learning, but also in student environment.
Looking forward, Murang’a Teachers’ Training College remains committed to expanding its programs, modernizing infrastructural facilities, and integrating digital methodologies. Guided by its vision and motto, MTTC continues to nurture skilled educators equipped to drive Kenya’s educational aspirations forward.
