Usyk vs Spong: Undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk primed to make heavyweight impact

The problem that not one of those heavyweights wanted has just arrived, with a devious smile.
Oleksandr Usyk is the man who could ruin it all – Anthony Joshuas dreams, Deontay Wilders claims, the list of Tyson Fury. Usyk was always lurking in the darkness, threatening to emerge, but today is his second.
The Ukrainian is the latest addition also Usyk believes hes the guy.
He combats Tyron Spong on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports, at his introduction after winning each significant championship in cruiserweight plus an Olympic gold medal.
The goal is supremacy against Joshua, preferably in the land of the giants.
This is a fighter in his absolute peak. Nothing is being built towards by him – that he wants it. Thirty-two years old, unbeaten and rested after a 2018 so glory-laden that it ranks alongside some fighters achievements inside a calendar year.
He is a welcome throwback, calculating in the manner of a python that gradually and invisibly crushes its prey. You wont hear him speak often – those reptile-like eyes locked on his target, silently is hunted by him. He wins where hes not welcome, at Moscow, Riga and Gdansk. He wins through which he is still welcome, in the United States and Britain.
Tony Bellew, Mairis Breidis, Murat Gassiev and marco Huck were beaten in consecutive fights in their home states, 14 months, spanning. That is a magnificent run of type.
Bellew called himthe best man Ive ever shared a ring with, and added:Hes so difficult to pin down. Exceptional.
Anyone who faces him is in a lot of trouble. Only the very best, and also the very biggest, will discover a way to conquer him.
Usyks accrued the undisputed cruiserweight championship during that streak that was sensational, setting him up with this chapter among the big boys of boxing and won the World Boxing Super Series.
Until he lost his world heavyweight titles, joshua had been the sights of Usyk. In the build-up of confronting Bellew, Usyks promoter Alexander Krassyuk told Sky Sports:The boxing universe would need the battle of two Olympic champs and 2 [future] undisputed professionals.
Usyk ominously said moments after beating Bellew:Becoming a champion of the planet isnt what I am dreaming about. Its my objective. It is what Im planning to do.
Usyk and joshua had seven world title straps a combined 37 wins along with two Olympic golds before Ruiz Jr put a fly in the ointment.
Asked for his dream stunt fight, Usyk lately responded:Anthony Joshua in Wembley. I believe it would be much tougher for me to fight Joshua than Ruiz Jr.. If you wish to be the best, you have to fight the best.
Joshua has warned:It is not just based on skill, the heavyweight division. Its predicated on will. How much you are able to take.
And thats essentially the burning matter because the skills of Usyk arent up for debate. But he is about three stone lighter, and is three inches shorter than Joshua, includes reach. That will be a major hurdle to jump.
It clarifies why David Haye and Evander Holyfield are the boxers to win world titles in cruiserweight and heavyweight. Like Usyk theyre just 63 with a 78 inch achieve, and weighed-in less than 16 stone. Usyk, unlike Holyfield and also Haye, wont depend on energy or strength but finesse and footwork.
Remember he has beaten Michael Hunter (who has since moved up to heavyweight) and Joe Joyce, currently 10-0 as a pro heavyweight, at a short-format amateur fight.
His skill-set is actually amazing, such as Vasiliy Lomachenkos, Joyce told Sky Sports. His shouts didnt bother me because he had been lighter, but he had been so crisp and sharp. With his mind motion, its actually difficult to even lay a glove on him
This weekends opponent in Chicago is going to be Surinam-born and Miami-based Spong, who has 14 wins and no defeats as a boxer after a successful run as a kickboxer. A knockout passing has been prevented by only one of the foes of Spong.
Usyk will retain his status as mandatory challenger to the WBO heavyweight title, which Ruiz Jr and Joshua will contest on December 7, if he comes through beating against Spong. He puts him up for a world championship fight and a place in history.
He is a difficulty that Wilder, Joshua and Fury havent had to consider, till today.
The danger is suddenly very real.
