Sir Winston (10/1) wins Belmont Stakes in another Triple Crown surprise
NEW YORK (AP) — Sir Winston gave the Triple Crown another unexpected turn, rallying to catch the Belmont Stakes on Saturday at a 10-1 upset.
The win gave the last two jewels in the showcase for thoroughbreds to trainer Mark Casse. He won the Preakness with War of Will, that had been expected to battle Tacitus that was favored . Instead, Casse colt took the lead following a ground-saving ride by Joel Rosario and held off Tacitus with a span. Long shot Joevia finished third and Legislation was fourth.
The Crown grind caught up to War of Will, who ran in all 3 races. He finished ninth in the field.
The Belmont capped an entertaining Crown highlighted by a disqualification in the Kentucky Derby and also a horse . It sparked interest despite no possibility of getting the next Triple Crown winner in five years, last 28, coming on the heels of Justify and American Pharoah at 2015.
