Tampa Bay asserted their first win of the new NFL season, holding Carolina’s final drive to claim.
With time running out involving the Panthers and the NFC South competitions trailing by six Cam Newton led Carolina in a final two-minute drill down the field.
They seemed to be heading for a first win of the year, or overtime, since they reached the redzone, however the Buccaneers came up with a late goal-line stand to make sure Newton, despite 324 passing yards, was held without a touchdown for the second consecutive week.
Lightning from the area meant the match was delayed for 25 minutes from the first quarter, but the Bucs held to provide new head coach Bruce Arians since taking charge in the 38, his first success
Peyton Barber ran for 82 yards and a touchdown while Jameis Winston threw for 208 yards as Tampa Bay held Newton in check if it mattered most, the Panthers quarterback came with another fumble as he suffered an eighth defeat in starts.
The Panthers required four field goals from a Barber safety, along with Matt Gay, to stand their 14 points up.
Chris Godwin was the safety blanket of Winston, the wide receiver scored the game’s only touchdown and hauled.
For Newton it was another night of pity, culminating at the drive that fell short despite fractures. Afterwards he chose a snap from their wildcat creation to take over on downs on fourth down play from them both, Christian McCaffrey ceased.
The Buccaneers (1-1) got plenty of strain on Newton together with three sacks coming from Shaquil Barrett. In addition they held McCaffrey into 53 total yards from scrimmage after he awakened 209 yards and 2 touchdowns at the season-opener from the Los Angeles Rams.
Up – The two teams get a protracted break the Buccaneers are when they face the New York Giants, while Carolina chase their first victory when they host the Arizona Cardinals.
