Leonard Floyd is finally ready for a breakout season
Playing with Khalil Mack did not magically reevaluate Leonard Floyd’s statistical prowess, since the Chicago Bears edge rusher compiled a career-low four sacks last season.
The principal issue for Floyd was wellbeing. While he did not miss a match, he coped with a hand injury that hindered his production. Once healthy, the former first-round select flashed the capability to take advantage of one-on-one blockers. The aim heading into 2019 would be for Floyd to finally be a consistent force off the border.

New outdoor linebackers coach Ted Monachino believes Floyd”can be unique” as he works on better counters to flip stresses into sacks.
“As he gets better at one or two items, his numbers will go up,” Monachino said, through the Chicago Tribune.” (What) may happen very first would be the effective rushes, right? The quarterback may be affected by him. He can influence the launching stage. A guy may be moved by him off the spot. However, the more of the ones that come together, the more productive rushes he’s going to get. The more he is going to get home and finish. Right now we’re focused on just a few things with Leonard. And it is not because he can not handle more. It is because we would like to construct his toolbox in a way that,’That is my go-to, and this really is off the counter of it.'”
Floyd believes he’s making strides after two consecutive seasons with over five sacks. He generated only 35 pressures this past year, per Pro Football Focus, standing 47th among edge defenders. Floyd believes those numbers can skyrocket now that he eventually has a complete, healthful offseason to work on his strategy.
“Being violent and just heading out with a mindset of getting to the quarterback,” Floyd said. “I must sharpen my tools. It has been quite different because I have been able to train and do each the things with no limitations this spring.
“I think I was playing my very best football throughout the second half of the year after I really got over my hand injury. I felt as though I had been playing much better and I am excited about this year and only building from that.”
The game picture disagrees with Floyd, as he flashed down the stretch last year, including a postseason sack. Now the Bears need their former first-round choice to finally break out and interrupt the QB for an entire year.
“If you place him in a phone booth against a big offensive speech, yes, power and strength is a problem,” Monachino said. “But his length and his explosiveness in a short space, they negate all that other drawback. As a power rusher at the top of the pocket, so I don’t think he’s going to get any issue. There are a couple things I believe in coaching pass rushers. Pass rush is all about effort and violence. That’s what it’s about. It is about how we finish on peak of the pocket. Because men do not run around other players in this league. Players are too good. So we have got to get him really good at how exactly is he likely to clear? And how is he going to finish?”
In case Floyd becomes a force opposite Mack, the Bears are a menace to QBs. This offseason, Chicago picked up Floyd’s fifth-year alternative for 2020, values $13.22 million. They will gladly pay that cost if the edge rusher breaks out in 2019.
